Massage During and After Pregnancy
Pregnancy is such a beautiful (and let’s be honest, sometimes uncomfortable) season of life. Your body is working hard to grow and nurture new life, and that often comes with sore backs, tired hips, swollen feet, and restless nights. Massage can be a gentle way to ease those changes, reduce stress, and help you feel more at ease. Warmest wishes on this new journey!
Prenatal Massage FAQs
Is prenatal massage safe in the first trimester?
Massage is generally safe in pregnancy with a certified prenatal practitioner. Any symptoms or health concerns may call for extra precautions and should be discussed with your healthcare provider before receiving a massage.
Please note: this is not medical advice. Some health conditions may be contraindicated for massage, so always consult your healthcare provider if you have concerns.
How often should I get a prenatal massage?
It mostly depends on your goals for the massage. Chronic pain and discomfort may require frequent visits to maintain results. Many clients enjoy a massage once a month in the first and second trimesters, and then every 2–3 weeks in the third trimester.
What’s different about a prenatal massage?
Prenatal massage is carefully adjusted throughout the stages of pregnancy. Side-lying positioning with supportive pillows is considered the best method in providing safe massage and is recommended around 20 weeks, or sooner, if you are uncomfortable on your back or stomach. We’ll give extra R&R focus on common pregnancy concerns like your lower back pain, hip tension, legs, and feet
Can I still lie on my stomah?
Early in pregnancy, and if it feels comfortable for you, yes. Around 20 weeks, we transition to using a side-lying supportive pregnancy pillow system so you can fully relax while your body is cared for.
What about after the baby comes?
Once your provider gives the go-ahead, postpartum massage can help your body recover, ease muscle tension, and provide much-needed R&R. If you’re nursing or have had a cesarean birth, pillows and bolsters are available to keep you supported and comfortable.
